JAZZFM91 Toronto Youth Big Band

The JAZZ.FM91 Toronto Youth Big Band is a community education project from JAZZ.FM91 [the radio station is also a registered charity promoting jazz education] with generous support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The band consists of 20 middle school and high school students from across the city who rehearse and perform under the direction of a professional jazz educator, Kelsley Grant. The members range in age from 13 to 17, and are a diverse mix of gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic class. The band played their first gig at the 2008 JAZZ.FM91 ?Jazz Lives? concert, and they were thrilled to participate. Since then, they have performed at gigs at ?The Rex Jazz and Blues Club? and the ?Long and McQuade Performance Hall?. They will be performing at the ?Oshawa Jazz and Blues Festival? in August, and the ?Canadian Big Band Celebration?, Port Elgin On. on Saturday September 20th. They will play a Jazz 4 Kids show at JAZZ.FM91 in the upcoming school year. Several of the band members will stay on with the band in the 2008-2009 year, while others will graduate high school and go on to study music at Humber College, the Dave Brubeck Institute, and other excellent learning institutions.    Previous Page
