Stardust Big Band

The Stardust Big Band, now in its 24th year, features vocalist Rebecca Binnendyk and a number of instrumental soloists. The band continues to enjoy performing the great Big Band repertoire of the 30's and 40's, as well as more contemporary compositions and arrangements for concerts. Stardust has been the host band for the Canadian Big Band Celebration since the festival?s inception in 1995. The band was founded in Walkerton Ontario in 1986 by leader Charlie Bell along with a number of instrumental music teachers and students from Bruce and Grey counties including Wayne McGrath, trumpet; Jim Leask, trumpet; Ridley Gillmore, trombone; Ron Code, trombone; Bill Purser, trombone; Cam Porter, sax; John Thompson, sax; John Riley, sax; Leslie Stewart, sax; Pierre Wade, bass; Marg Peckham, piano and Steve Peckham, drums. The band?s first gig was performed at the Fairy Lake Park in Southampton Ontario, as the band membership expanded many more gigs were to follow. Ernie Duff, an affable crooner from Chesley Ontario, originally from England, joined the band a year later. Throughout the years the band membership has involved a number of wonderful musicians from both near and far performing not only the great repertoire of the big bands but also compositions and original arrangements by Don Buchanan, Ian Burbidge and Charlie Bell. Throughout the years the band has given many memorable performances both locally and throughout Ontario including a feature at the Royal York Hotel and the Palais Royale in Toronto Ontario. The band was professionally recorded in 1996 and 1998 producing two cds, ?Presenting Stardust Big Band? and ?Return Engagement?, the last cd featuring vocalists Ernie Duff and Deborah Donovan. The band continues to evolve and hopes to venture into a new exciting format in the future as it approaches it?s 25th year in 2011.
